Is it any surprise that the two Canadian Social Enterprises who won at Trico Charitable Foundation‘s recent Social EnterPrize event in Calgary were from Vancouver’s DTES? Not to those of us who live and work in the area!
I want to send out the biggest, warmest and proudest congratulations on behalf of Hastings Crossing BIA to both Potluck Cafe and Catering and to Mission Possible who were both recognized and awarded for the industry leading and community building work that they do.
Here’s a a clip from the press release sent out by Trico.
“The Social EnterPrize for mature organizations was awarded to Potluck Cafe and Catering of Vancouver, British Columbia. Potluck operates a neighbourhood cafe and provides professional catering services to a wide range of clients. As well, Potluck serves meals and provides job opportunities to many of Vancouver’s most vulnerable residents. Between 85-90 percent of Potluck’s revenues came from the catering business. Potluck Cafe and Catering will receive a two year grant totalling $60 thousand.
The Social EnterPrize for emerging organizations was awarded to Mission Possible of Vancouver, British Columbia. Mission Possible, through its social enterprise, MP Maintenance, provides property maintenance services to more to more than sixty businesses and individuals. MP Maintenance transforms lives by helping people experiencing homelessness and poverty achieve a renewed sense of dignity and purpose through meaningful work. Since opening less than two years ago, MP Maintenance has provided jobs for almost two dozen people. The organization will receive a two year grant totalling $60 thousand.”
Trico Charitable Foundation Executive Chairman, Mr Wayne Chiu also had these words to share:
“I want to congratulate the winners”, said Wayne Chiu, “They have set a very high standard for future years. All are excellent examples of how social enterprise can effectively deepen community impact. I also want to thank the jury which has the monumental task of picking just three winners from more than forty-five applications from social enterprises across the country.””
HxBIA looks forward to continuing our excellent working relationships with both Mission Possible (MP Enterprises), Potluck Cafe and the host of innovative social enterprises at work in our BIA and the DTES. Vancouver should be proud today of the work they do in contributing to healthier communities and a better tomorrow.
