The Future of Northeast False Creek: Why We’re Partnering for Action

Nearly ten years ago, the Hastings Crossing BIA was at the planning table helping shape the vision for Northeast False Creek.

We knew then what remains true today: replacing the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts isn’t just an infrastructure project. It is a generational opportunity to reconnect divided neighborhoods, deliver much-needed affordable housing, support cultural redress, and build a stronger local economy across Hastings Crossing, Chinatown, and the Downtown Eastside.

While important preliminary steps have been made over the years, the core commitments of the 2018 Northeast False Creek Plan remain unresolved.

That is why HxBIA has joined forces with community partners across Hogan’s Alley, Chinatown, False Creek, and the Downtown Eastside for a coalition campaign ahead of the upcoming municipal election.

Together, we are asking all 2026 city council and mayoral candidates to publicly commit to three clear priorities:

  1. Prioritize and fund the removal of the viaducts.

  2. Complete the planning and rezoning required to move the site forward.

  3. Establish a Northeast False Creek Task Force with meaningful community representation and transparent reporting.

How to Get Involved

As voters prepare for the upcoming election, we need candidates to be clear about where they stand on turning long-approved plans into real, on-the-ground outcomes.

To help you stay informed, the campaign coalition has launched a candidate tracker where you can see which municipal candidates have signed on to support these priorities.

The choices made in Northeast False Creek will shape the future of our district for decades to come. Let’s make sure our local leaders are ready to turn promises into action.
